Born in Brazil in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte at the young age of nine. Tavares began to appear in local shows and was crowned the "Elite Model of the Year" contest at the young age of 13. Agents were able to invite her to Sao Paulo in order to explore a career as a model one year later. She was just 17 when she first made the pages of L'Officiel Paris and Deutsch, and also U.S. Marie Claire, Vogue Paris and Vogue Paris. In New York City, she joined the Marilyn Modeling Agency. In the following years, she was featured in a variety of other magazines, including ELLE and Cosmopolitan and Allure as well as Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Tavares has been a part of many famous designer's collections which include Chanel, Emanuel Ungaro and Versace. Tavares has helped promote[clarification needed] brands like Versace, Chloe, Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton Mano, Nine West, Zoomp, and was a top figure in the Ralph Lauren Spring 2000 collection. Tavares was signed to an $1.3M contract with the Guerlain the perfume maker. Tavares has been included in the Victoria's Secret catalogs and their fashion show in 2000 in Cannes and their 2002 and 2001 shows, 2003 and 2003 fashion shows in 2003, 2003 and 2005.
