Lionel Andres Messi (Spanish pronunciation [ljo'nel 'an'dres'mesi(listen) (listen); born 24 June 1987), is an Argentine professional footballer who is a forward for Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain and is captain of the Argentina national team. He is widely regarded as one of the best players ever, Messi has won a record-setting seven Ballon d'Or awards, a record six European Golden Shoes, and in the year 2020 was selected for the Ballon d'Or Dream Team. Until it was time to leave the club in 2021, Messi spent the entirety of his professional career at Barcelona, where he won an unprecedented 35 club trophies, including ten La Liga titles, seven Copa del Rey titles and four UEFA Champions Leagues. Messi is a prolific goal-scorer and an innovative player. He holds the record for the highest number of goals scored in La Liga (474), the most goals scored in the course of a European league season (50), the most hat-tricks (La Liga) as well as the UEFA Champions League (and the Copa America). He also holds the record of having the highest number of international goals scored by the UEFA Champions League and Copa America by a South American male.
