One of the highest-paid actresses, she has been recognized with numerous awards which include an Academy Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award as well as a Golden Globe Award. In 2016 Time listed her as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.Theron became famous internationally in the 1990s by playing the role of the leading lady in the Hollywood films The Devil's Advocate (1997), Mighty Joe Young (1998) as well as The Cider House Rules (1999). Acclaim from critics was given to her role as serial killer Aileen Wuornos. The role earned her the Silver Bear Award and Academy Award for Best Actress. This made her the first South African actress to win an Oscar in an acting category.
