Phil

The Greek root phil- takes its meaning from the Greek word for "love". Philosophy, also taken from the Greek root phil-, which translates to "love", refers to studying human customs and the significance of life. One of the most common uses of the root phil- is with philias.A"philia" is the affection or fascination with a certain object or topic. The suffix -philia is used to indicate the love or obsession with something more specific. It is somewhat anaonymous to the suffix -phobia. Philias may be biological (e.g. rhizophilia, preference for living in roots) or chemical (e.g. Chromophilous, substances that are easily stained) and can also be a hobby/liking (e.g. icthyophilia is a love for fish. Philia (TSyKHy), a Greek word that means love, is a reference to brotherly affection, friendship, and love. This contrasts with Eros (or sexual/romantic love) and love for agape (or spiritual love that is detached and not as intense). However, English usage differs in certain cases from the etymological usage and many of these words refer to sexual attraction in English not to love for brothers but rather to sexual attraction.
