Selena is among the most well-known performers from the Mexican-American genre of the late 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her third on their 2020 list of the "Greatest Latino Artists" basing their selection on Latin songs and Latin albums. Her fashion choices earned her the title "Tejano Madonna" according to media sources. Also, she is an important Latin artist , and is acknowledged for the introduction of the Tejano music genre into the forefront of. She made her debut in the world of music as a part of the group Selena y Los Dinos which comprised her siblings A.B. Quintanilla, Suzette Quintanilla. The singer was often criticized in the 1980s, and was denied bookings at Texas venues due to her performances of Tejano music, which is a largely male-dominated genre. The acclaim she received grew after she won the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987.
