Caryn Elaine Johnson (born on November 13th 1955) popularly referred to as Whoopi Goldberg (/'wUpiWhoopi Goldberg/) is an American comedian, actor writer, author, and TV personality.A recipient of numerous awards She is among 17 entertainers to be awarded the EGOT which includes an Emmy Award, a Grammy Award and an Academy Award ("Oscar"), and a Tony Award. In 2001, she received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.Goldberg began her career on stage in 1983, with her solo show, Spook Show. The show was later moved to Broadway under the name Whoopi Goldberg and ran from 1984 to 1985. The show's recording was a success and she was awarded the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. Her first film role was in 1985 when she played Celie, a woman who is treated badly in the Deep South in Steven Spielberg’s period drama film The Color Purple. She won the Golden Globe Award as Best Actress in Motion Picture Drama.
