Jordan Ross Belfort (/'belf@rt/; born July 9, 1962) is an American businessman and author, speaker, former stockbroker, and financial criminal. In 1999, he pleaded guilty to fraud and other related charges relating to stock-market manipulation and the running of a boiler room as part of a penny-stock fraud. Belfort was sentenced to 22 months in prison in connection with an agreement wherein he gave testimony against numerous members and subordinates involved in the fraud scheme.He wrote his memoir The Wolf of Wall Street in 2007, which was made into a Martin Scorsese film of the identical title released in 2013. In the film, the character was played by Leonardo DiCaprio. The memoirs and interviews claim that his first success was the meat-selling firm. He employed a number of employees and was able to sell 5,000 pounds (2300 kilograms) of beef each week. Stratton Oakmont functioned as a boiler room that marketed penny stocks, and defrauded investors through "pump and dump" stock sales.
